Camila Meza has once again executed the rare feat of both singing the standards and playing the guitar, this time at the Cornelia Street Café’s downstairs cabaret, one of my favorite New York venues for food and music. When I first heard this Chilean artist sing in her native Spanish, I thought there was something in her voice of the sea and the sky of her country, and I did not feel I was being fanciful for thinking so. More recently, as I have witnessed her singing more and more of the North American repertory in English, her voice has been leavened with something urban and cosmopolitan, tinged still with memory, hope, and occasional sadness, but stronger and less ethereal. If she made a wrong move in her confident and assured November 1 performance, I did not see – or hear – it.
